Due to legal restrictions Ubuntu does not install copyrighted and patented multimedia software.
Check the following link.
Then follow the simple steps below to install the restricted multimedia software when you are on-campus.
- Step 1
Setup the campus software repositories.
- Step 2
- Step 3
Type CTL+ALT+t on the keyboard. A terminal will open. Move it to a handy corner of your screen.
- Step 4
Select all of the text below by holding down the left-button of your mouse and dragging along all of the following text.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
- Release the left-button and then right-click on the selection.
- Select the "Copy" function from the drop down menu.
- Right-click on the blinking cursor in the open terminal and select "Paste".
- Now press the "Enter" key on the keyboard.
- You will be asked for your password and permission to install software.
- Follow the instructions.
- Step 5 (Optional) Playing encrypted video DVD's
Perform the following as you did in step 3 and step 4 above.
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 non-free-codecs
- Step 6 (Optional) Change default multimedia applications for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
There are better multimedia applications than the default, to change them to "Clementine" for music and "VLC" for video follow the instructions below in a terminal.
First, type the following in a terminal to remove the defaults
sudo apt-get remove rhythmbox totem
Then, type the following in a terminal to install Clementine and VLC.
sudo apt-get install clementine vlc
Done. Logout and login to make sure the new defaults are picked up.
