The open source alternative for NXInetkey is called Pynetkey.

Installation of "Pynetkey"
  1. Go to Janto Dreijer's website.
  2. Download the file called pynetkey###.deb.
  3. Double-click on pynetkey###.deb file, the "Software Center" will open.
  4. Click on "Install".
To open an internet connection after installation
  1. Search for Pynetkey using the Dash.
  2. Enter your campus username and password in the dialog and click on "Connect".

You will see a ladybird icon appear in the top panel notification area representing the status of pynetkey.

  • A green ladybird icon means the internet is open.
  • An orange ladybird icon means the internet is closed.
  • A red ladybird icon means something is wrong.

Hover with your mouse over the icon to see the error message, connect/disconnect message or your internet usage for the month.
