The open source alternative for NXInetkey is called Pynetkey written by Janto Dreijer.

Installation of "Pynetkey"
  1. Go to: Janto Dreijer's website.
  2. Download the file starting with pynetkey and ending with the .deb extension.
  3. Open a file manager and go to the location where you downloaded the file.
  4. Double-click on the downloaded file.
  5. The "Ubuntu Software Center" will open.
  6. Click on "Install".
To open an internet connection after installation
  1. Search for Pynetkey using the Dash.
  2. Enter your campus username and password in the dialog.
  3. Click on "Connect".

You will see a ladybird icon appear in the top panel notification area representing the status of pynetkey.

  • A green ladybird icon means the internet is open.
  • An orange ladybird icon means the internet is closed.
  • A red ladybird icon means something is wrong.

Click on the ladybird icon on the top panel, to enable further functionality.
