ADSL Internet Connection

If you use an ADSL internet connection from Telkom then you probably have a wireless router device connected to your phone line. Below are some links to help you secure your wireless router from internet hackers.

Local Area Network (LAN) Safety for Business

To secure your network, connect only one computer to the internet ADSL connection then follow the steps below.

Step 1. Close all ports and only open those needed on your internet firewall.
Step 2. Only allow authorised users through your internet firewall by using proxy server software.
Step 3. Inspect all the data coming through the open ports on your firewall for security risks.
Step 4. Check the security of your internal network for malicious software used/installed via USB disks and CD/DVD's.
Step 5. Help protect the web.
DDOS Protection

Edit /etc/sysctl.conf and add the following:

#DDOS Protection
net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_max_syn_backlog = 2048
net.ipv4.tcp_synack_retries = 2
net.ipv4.tcp_syn_retries = 5

The type sysctl -p to activate the settings.

Once all the above are completed, then point/setup all your software that needs to connect to the internet to go through this one machine.

Your network/system administrator should have the essential skills to setup all of the above on your servers and desktops.
