  • This procedure will require a little bit of patience and a pinch of command line magic.
  • However not to worry, since the instructions are fairly clear.
Introduction

Our central IT department runs a mirror of the Ubuntu software on a server on campus so that you can save money on software updates via the internet.

Follow the procedure below to setup your computer to use the campus software servers.

Step 1

Type CTL+ALT+t on the keyboard. A terminal will open. Move it to a handy corner of your screen.

Step 2

Select all of the text below by holding down the left-button of your mouse and dragging along all of the following text.

gksudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list-backup
  1. Release the left-button and then right-click on the selection.
  2. Select the "Copy" function from the drop down menu.
  3. In the open terminal, right-click on the blinking cursor and select "Paste".
  4. Now press the "Enter" key on the keyboard.
  5. Enter your password in the pop-up.
Step 3

Select all of the text below by holding down the left-button of your mouse and dragging along all of the following text.

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
  1. Release the left-button and then right-click on the selection.
  2. Select the "Copy" function from the drop down menu.
  3. In the open terminal, right-click on the blinking cursor and select "Paste".
  4. Now press the "Enter" key on the keyboard.
Step 4

Delete all of the contents in the opened file.

Step 5

Select all of the text below by holding down the left-button of your mouse and dragging along all of the following text.
