Introduction

There are several methods of managing software on an Ubuntu system. You can compile the software from original source code or you can install a DEB binary package or an RPM binary package. What is unique about the Ubuntu method is that it is based on the Debian package management methods. Most of the software on an Ubuntu system is kept in "repositories". The repositories are normally kept on a server. In our case, ftp://ftp.sun.ac.za/ubuntu is the main campus server.

* If your PC is connected to the campus network, it is advisable that you setup the "repositories" first before continuing.

* You must have administrator privileges to be able to install software.
