VMWare-Tools

The central IT dept is making use of VMWare virtualisation. This wiki page documents the installation of the VMWare tools for a virtualised Ubuntu server.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Type the following in a terminal:

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/vmware-vmtools.list

Copy and paste the following into the open file

deb ftp://ftp.sun.ac.za/pub/mirrors/vmware-tools/tools/esx/latest/ubuntu trusty main

Save the file by typing CTL+O, and then pressing Enter. Exit the file by typing CTL+X.

Now type the following to update the software lists:

sudo apt-get update

Finally, to install the VMWare tools, type the following:

sudo apt-get install vmware-tools-services

To see if the service is running after installation, type:

pstree

You should see the vmtoolsd service running.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Type the following in a terminal:

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/vmware-vmtools.list

Copy and paste the following into the open file

deb ftp://ftp.sun.ac.za/pub/mirrors/vmware-tools/tools/esx/latest/ubuntu precise main

Save the file by typing CTL+O, and then pressing Enter. Exit the file by typing CTL+X.

Now type the following to update the software lists:

sudo apt-get update

Finally, to install the VMWare tools, type the following:

sudo apt-get install vmware-tools-services

To see if the service is running after installation, type:

pstree

You should see the vmtoolsd service running.
